Reading Comb

Learn the art of reading comb

Comb is the embodiment of the hive. It is their tissue, their skeletal structure, their nervous system, their nursery. How we see comb helps inform how we keep bees. One of the sets of beekeeping is learning to “read” the comb. Learning to understand what’s happening beneath all those moving bees. What can you see? Pollen? Nectar? Royal jelly? Eggs? Brood? Abundance? Strength? Weakness? Illness?
All these things can be indicated on the comb.

This two hour pre-recorded class will focus on comb itself:

Through a series of slides you will learn:

  • How to hold comb (natural and on foundation)

  • How to handle comb as you draw it out and put it back into hive

  • What to look for: eggs, larvae, pollen, nectar, queen cells

  • How to find the queen

  • How to recognize healthy vs sick brood
